Ultimately, it is in the denial or denigration of “the earth,” “the apparent world,” that Nietzsche finds the most decisive objection to religion. The concept of “God,” he explains, was invented as “a counterconcept of life,” and the “concept of the ‘beyond,’ the ‘true world’ invented in order to devaluate the only world there is—in order to retain no goal, no reason, no task for our earthly reality!”32 “‘God’ represents a turning away from life, a critique of life, even a contempt for it.”33 Nietzsche himself condemns the “weariness that wants to reach the ultimate with one leap, with one fatal leap, a poor ignorant weariness that does not want to want any more: this created all gods and afterworlds.”34 In some of his most powerful lines, he writes:
